Hardwax Oil

The main wood finish used at Blackwood Studio is a hardwax oil combination that is derived from renewable raw oils and waxes. This is applied by hand and leaves the wood looking very natural and authentic, while bringing out it's natural beauty. It is buffed out to a low sheen and provides a satisfying soft wax feel. While not as tough as polyurethane, it is my preferred finish due to low environmental impact, looks, feel, and reparability. Refer to the care guide for maintenance information.

Polyurethane

A water based polyurethane in a low satin sheen is used when a piece is ordered in "black stained oak". Hardwax oil over black stain has a tendency to transfer the black colour when excessive rubbing or friction occurs. Therefor it's in the best interest to use a polyurethane instead, which coats and protects the underlying colour and stands up to more abuse. Refer to the care guide for maintenance information.
