Hardwax Oil
The main wood finish used at Blackwood Studio is a hardwax oil combination that is derived from renewable raw oils and waxes. This is applied by hand and leaves the wood looking very natural and authentic, while bringing out it's natural beauty. It is buffed out to a low sheen and provides a satisfying soft wax feel. While not as tough as polyurethane, it is my preferred finish due to low environmental impact, looks, feel, and reparability. Refer to the care guide for maintenance information.
Polyurethane
A water based polyurethane in a satin sheen is used when extra protection is needed. Any piece ordered in "black stained oak" comes this way by default. Hardwax oil over black stain has a tendency to transfer the black colour when excessive rubbing or friction occurs. Therefor it's in the best interest to use a polyurethane instead, which coats and protects the underlying colour and stands up to more abuse. Refer to the care guide for maintenance information.
Powder-Coated Steel
Powder-coated steel offers a durable, low-maintenance finish that’s built to last. The powder coating process involves applying a dry, electrostatically charged pigment to the steel, which is then cured under heat to create a smooth, protective layer. This finish is tougher than paint, resistant to chips, scratches, corrosion, and available in a wide range of colors and sheens. Whether used indoors or out, powder-coated steel combines strength and style for long-lasting performance.
Blackened Steel
Blackened steel is all about raw character and timeless edge. Through a controlled oxidation process, the surface of the steel is darkened to achieve a deep, rich finish that highlights its natural grain and imperfections. Unlike paint or powder coating, this finish is a chemical reaction, giving each piece a unique, organic look. Blackwood Studio finishes it with a protective wax topcoat, which gives it resistance to minor wear and tear. Blackened steel is unique, tactile, and keeps steel looking like.... steel! Perfect for adding depth and drama to modern spaces.
