A look into Blackwood Studio
Blackwood Studio was officially founded in 2021 after many years of preparation. It took about 8 years to come to fruition as I juggled life and how to fit a new business into it. I've been building and designing things for as long as I can remember so this seemed like the next logical step. I eventually started gravitating towards home furnishings and set out on a path to make my objects available to the general public. This is a place for all of my artistic energy to flow, giving way to a wide variety of shapes and forms. My name is Leighton Hill, and welcome to Blackwood Studio.
Products:
I strive to offer up something different than the usual mass produced items you may see in everyday life. Most of my designs lean to a modern, clean looking aesthetic. Nothing too fancy or intricate, but simple pieces adorned with points of interest to pique your interest and draw you in for a second look. My pieces are created to look attractive in all types of spaces, both large and small, upscale and down to earth. All furnishings are built to last, and look good while doing so.
Philosophy:
My business model takes a "spiral" approach to operations. I try and source materials and products as close as possible to my location and work my way out from there. This mindset ensures that I keep my footprint as small as possible, while at the same time supporting other local businesses and supply chains. Everything is sourced in Canada unless I absolutely can't find it, in which case I'll look to the US next, and lastly overseas. Efficiency is also very important, so scraps and leftovers from larger projects are often used in the creation of smaller offerings to help minimize waste. I try and re-use all shipping and packaging materials that I come across, as well as the use of FSC certified wood from local retailers wherever possible.
